21 NFL players died in action during WWII
On December 15, 1945 After the Japanese surrendered ending World War II, a count showed that the NFL service roster, limited to men who had played in league games, totaled 638, 21 of whom had died in action. Almost 1,000 NFL personnel served in the military during World War II.
Notable players: Among those killed were several notable players, such as New York Giants tackle Al Blozis and fellow Giant Jack Lummus, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
